If you don’t mind a classic chess. Blitz/bullet/rapid/horde are different styles that don’t take as long to learn enough to have fun. Chess puzzles or against the computer are available if you want to keep it strictly single player. Lichess for multiplayer or I like chess tactics pro for puzzles.

Crosswords, there are programs like alphacross that aggregate from other sources to try different puzzles to find ones that aren’t too easy or hard.

I won’t support any streaming service that has a sub+ad tier. Ads with no sub or sub no ads, anything else is incredibly greedy and the same as cable TV.

As someone who conferenced some basic ML research in early 2000s and then left academia for a boring/stable software engineering gig in a non IT org to escape the hype bubble only to end up having to talk to people about ML/AI frequently this article speaks to me.

Pretty much all of the command line coreutils programs I use daily are in C; cd, ls, pwd, touch, rm, etc. If I want to write some small utility I’ll usually reach for a scripting language first like bash python ruby etc, but if it needs to be small and fast I’ll use C instead.

One track lover

It’s apparently like driving a car or riding a bike or swinging a hammer, there’s a small learning curve but with a little practice it’s overcome pretty quickly and feels like a natural extension of yourself. But yeah given a preference I’d probably want to try tying it to wrist or hand movements for practicality.

I haven’t tried it but it has a couple foot sensors that are used to control it. Probably more preferable if there was some way to link it into the nervous system without surgery, but lacking that it’s going to piggyback on some other fine motor control.

Crime rates dropping in US, multiple companies working with NASA for ISS access, direct observation of gravitational waves, left reddit for Lemmy, multiple COVID vaccines in like a year from outbreak, more usage of renewable energy sources, etc. There are some obvious problems we need to get together and address as communities, countries, and species, but there are a bunch of improvements and advancements being made too.

It’s not that intercessory prayer needs to work 100% to be convincing, it just needs to beat random chance and it doesn’t do that.

Natural processes can describe how those things came to exist without needing to appeal to supernatural claims or gods.

You’ve seen things you attribute to a god, but people in other religions attribute the same things to their god and so far I don’t think anyone has shown empirical evidence for any gods, and I don’t know about you but I use empirical evidence when changing my confidence on whether something or someone exists or doesn’t.

Many people have a negative opinion on organized religion because we can see the negative effects believing things without sufficient evidence can have on individuals and communities.

Probably take a break for a month or two then look for some oss project or activism to participate in, play more music and video games, etc.

I don’t think anything we’ve seen yet solves wealth inequality, but whether that becomes a property of a currency or not may change.

I agree voting is important for governance but what if citizens held that specific power by default instead of the government, and if the government wanted to use that power they would require asking for it? It’s the same people doing the voting but for a specific measure instead of a representative. I didn’t think we’re there yet but that being a possibility seems hopeful.
