Netflix Pricing Shakeup Removes Cheapest Ad-Free Plan In U.K. and U.S.::Online streaming giant Netflix has quietly removed its ad-free Basic plan, forcing users to pay more or sit through adverts to keep costs down.
I guess it’s time to go back to torrenting movies and shows. I literally come from a generation that used to watch 40 part movies on youtube playlists. Bring it on Netflix.
Stremio+Torrentio+RealDebrid and you’re golden.
VPN with no logging is probably a good addition to that list
Not needed with Real Debrid. Without it, yes.
Had no idea, that’s good to know!
If anyone wants a suggestion for one Mullvad is fantastic. They somewhat recently withstood a real life test of being raided and proved they keep no logs. There is no bulk pricing but the service is top tier.
Their pricing on the site made for a good laugh. 5 Euro, take it or leave it!
They’re no longer good for torrenting as they removed port forwarding at the beginning of the month.
Port forwarding isn’t necessary for torrents…
However, I would agree that they’re not the best for torrenting, Mullvad is for truly paranoid people that are REALLY concerned about privacy. If you just want to torrent without getting letters from your ISP, cheaper options like Nord, Proton, and PIA are fine.
It’s necessary if you want to seed anything or join a private tracker. Torrenting without port forwarding just leads to a bunch of dead torrents and the inability to share/download that content in the future.
Eh? What does port forwarding have to do with dead torrents? I was under the impression that trackers tracked your IP to see if you were seeding, and that doesn’t require port forwarding. Also, I’d argue that your private tracker isn’t private enough if you need a VPN to use it. I use one private tracker without a VPN to avoid all those issues, and the rest of my torrenting is on public trackers with a VPN. Seems to have worked so far.
just watch on f2movies or an adjacent site it streams almost every movie and show
Figures. No surprise really. When you’ve maxed everything out the only path to growth is to squeeze existing customers.
That’s capitalism, baby. It’s always growth growth growth without end. Capitalists having a solid, mature product/service that’s making them a constant stream of money is never enough, they have to keep making more and more money, even if it means making the product shittier and shittier and sucking every last possible cent out of the end user until the product is a ghost of its former self. But hey, shareholder profits are up half a percent in the last quarter, totally worth it.

Forbes (2020) seems to disagree: “Viewed from the lens of net income, Netflix has been performing well, with its net profits growing 3x from around $0.6 billion in 2017 to $1.9 billion in 2019.” If their profitability increased during the pandemic, as seems likely, this feels more like another naked money grab. It’s almost guaranteed to drive away users, something that they can ill afford under any circumstances.
Yeah not sure what they’re talking about as Netflix was massive long before COVID was a thing. They were the first streaming service and brought rise to all the others.
Yeah, Netflix has been profitable for decades. They killed Blockbuster and other rental stores. One doesn’t manage to do that while losing money.

I mean, you can see their financial statements. All that stuff is public info since they are a publicly traded company. This chart shows the net profits since 2010 going from 161m to almost 5B

Fuck ads
These companies seem to forget that the main thing holding them afloat is the ability to watch it simply at a low cost. Pirating is very easy and there are plenty of tools to achieve this same goal if prices keep going up.
I’ve already abandoned Netflix. I would rather pirate shows I hear are good than mindlessly scroll on that platform while paying $240 a year or whatever.
As soon as they reported that the plan with ads was making them more money the fate of the basic plan was sealed. This combined with the money grab with household sharing means my Plex server is getting a lot of use 🌝
Stremio + Torrentio + Real-Debrid is becoming better by the day now. I never had a Netflix subscription in the first place, but I don’t think I would ever get one now.
I don’t feel like this is a technology post, purely another anti-consumer business decision being levied against us.
As for the whole “piracy has rejoined the chat” “hello old friend” discourse - pirate what? The One Piece live action? Post-Cavil Witcher? TV hasn’t been worth watching in a good while, netflix even longer. I barely turn mine on anymore.
Are we trying to set a new record for reposts for the same story in the same community within a single day?
Dude seriously. This is like the 3rd repost I’ve seen today on this. I figured Lemmy would at least be slightly less dogshit than Reddit but damn…
You can pay in Turkish Lira, which translates roughly to 6 EUR/USD for the premium plan.
