  • A lot of them are crypto scammers. I encountered a ton of those when I was on dating apps - they’d get you emotionally invested by just making small talk, flirting, etc. for a couple days, then they’d ask about what you did for work, and then they’d tell you how much they make trading crypto. Eventually it gets to the point where they ask you to send them money that they promise to invest on your behalf and give you all the profits. They simply take that money for themselves though, obviously.

  • My crazy wacko conspiracy theory - software development is just a really weird discipline, most of the people in the field are bad at it, and it doesn’t have the same amount of standardization and regulation that other engineering fields have, so doing it “right” looks a lot fuzzier than doing, say, civil engineering “right”.

The biggest thing though is that most people are bad at it. It’s really hard to evaluate high level organizational concepts like waterfall vs. agile when we still have developers arguing over the usefulness of unit tests.

  • Sounds like he doesn’t want to spend his time tinkering, but playing.

Ehhh, I feel like this person is a tinkerer, it’s just the things they wanna tinker with don’t play nice with Linux.

Installing a modded version of Minecraft indicates a desire to tinker. Roblox is a game based around the concept of tinkering. EA games (especially ones from 7 years ago) require some level of tinkering even in Windows.
