bio
yep, I mean a GUI based software centre
NixOS:
I think it will easily be the number 1 distro if/when they can :
Could you link to the Lemmy style app please, I haven’t heard of this before
Sorry about this. I just found the video interesting when it popped up on my feed.
I don’t know about the history of this creator, I just found this particular video interesting when it popped up. Sorry if this creator is known to be untrustworthy.
You can install alternative android distros on an android phone that will keep updating long after the manufacturer has stopped. For example lineage OS which supports lots of devices (but not all).
There are also Linux distros targeted to mobile devices.
You just need to pick a device that is supported when buying.
Discourse and Lemmy are both based around topics/communities so hopefully there will be better federation here. E.g. being able to follow a discourse topic from lemmy would be really cool.
Hopefully they have done this in a way where Lemmy can federate with then easily.
We can already view mastodon threads that are linear inside Lemmy.
Oh, sorry. It wasn’t for me earlier (I linked through from Firefox suggestions)
Have you set android autofill framework to use bitwarden?
Libro.FM is DRM free and lets you buy any book once a month for a fixed cost.
I have personally used fedora and nixos on a gen 1 framework 13 and it works great.
Does Framework do anything regarding FOSS drivers or firmware?
Regarding your question they say this:
We deliberately selected components and modules that didn’t require new kernel driver development and have been providing distro maintainers with pre-release hardware to test to improve compatibility. We’re also working on enabling firmware updates through LVFS to complete the Linux experience.

I think the DIY model doesn’t include some components in the base price and that is why it is cheaper. Once you configure it to include other components it is a comparable price.
It seems the DIY option will only really save you money if you already have those components or if you buy those other components cheaply somewhere else.
Previous products took much longer for batches to sell out. Even the AMD framework 13 laptops didn’t sell this fast and they were the #1 thing the community had been asking for for about a year.
We (sadly) can’t tell how many units are in a batch. But we can tell that demand is far exceeding their expectations.
Yep its really impressive for such an early project.
Having said that I can’t work out how to edit comments/posts I have made.
It would also be nice to have a preview of your comment too.
Hopefully they add that at some point.
Rebuilding after adding a single program doesn’t take too long (depends on the program but often less than a minuet).
Rebuilding after upgrading the channel takes longer on my slow internet as many programs have version upgrades that need to be downloaded. I think it took 30-60mins last time. I imagine it would be faster with better internet.
never had that issue before, as long as they have the same version and config
Then you are very lucky. “It worked on my machine” is a meme for a reason.
wasn’t that possible before with snapshotting (btrfs/lvm)?
I haven’t used snapshotting with those before. I guess the difference is that with nix it is done by the package manager by default, with btrfs/lvm you would have to set that up independently (please correct of this is not the case).
You specify the kernal in the config and rebuild, reboot.
Here are the docs if you’re interested: https://nixos.wiki/wiki/Linux_kernel
So how useful it is in practice?
It’s useful for quite a few things in practise:
This video shows off some of the cool things you can do with nix: https://youtube.com/watch?v=6Le0IbPRzOE&feature=share9
How do updates work?
You update a programming by specifying the latest version of a program in config and rebuilding.
You update the OS by pointing to the channel you want to use and rebuilding.
You can time travel back to a previous state if anything goes wrong.
Can it play Crysis?
I expect so, some people.do use nix for gaming.
Yeah I agree, I am sure they are missing some obscure stuff. But in practise it has everything that I use and there has been no need for me to touch flatpak/appimage/snap
