Separate apps for various retail stores. I don’t want a home depot app. I don’t want a kroger app. We have a generic app for this category called a web browser. If you want me to download a specialized app for your store, I assume that means that my browser does not sufficiently breach my privacy for your “business purposes.”
I don’t believe gibbons can fly, but they should lead with something more relevant like “gibbons are terrestrial as opposed to aquatic apes.” ;)
I am scared of what Google ai thinks of the aquatic ape hypothesis.
I googled gibbons and the Ai paragraph at the beginning started with “Gibbons are non-flying apes with long arms…” Way to wreck your credibility with the third word.

The Joycons were an absolute disaster and ruined the portable experience. I got 4 of them repaired. When they inevitably broke again, I gave up and bought a pro controller. Precariously balancing the Switch on your lap or setting it on furniture so you can use a pro controller is not a handheld. Still had lots of fun with the games on it, but the experience should have been better. Nintendo has building controllers for decades, you would think they could at least begin to approach competency.

My 5G phone’s internet sucks compared to the Spectrum I have at the house. Spectrum sucks compared to the Frontier fiber alternative, but I am currently in the Spectrum part of the cycle of having to alternate between them to avoid paying 2x as much. I think Spectrum is starting to realize that they suck because there full rate for my current plan is only about $5 more than Frontier’s promo rate. I imagine they are hoping that I dislike switching enough that I’ll eat the extra cost to avoid switching. If Frontier would just let me have the promo rate all of the time, they would get more money from me, but I guess too many people are too lazy to switch for them to do that.
I imagine that lithography for integrated circuits would be an application, assuming you could make an appropriate photo-resist. The shorter the wavelength, the smaller the possible feature size. Current lithography relies on constructive and destructive interference between wavelengths to create super small features.
I give them some water, because it is probably pretty scarce and valuable by 2074. Then I ask them if they remembered to bring me the lottery ticket numbers for the big lottery that I win in October of 2024.

I have graduated to the stage of my career where I believe “I have to teach these kids how to do things correctly before my coworkers corrupt them, or they learn bad behaviors on their own.” I was thrown in the fire early in my career and am trying to be the mentor I wish I had. I know where my knowledge gaps are, but generally know who to rely on. I definitely generate the most value when I stick to my expertise, but I still try to learn more whenever possible.
I should remember this crap for my next self-evaluation (I hate that crap).
I find the article’s quoting of Hausfather deceptive, particularly the part about not being well supported by the literature. I don’t think Hausfather thinks Hansen is wrong at all. I think he wants more data confirming Hansen’s findings. I read a lot of climate literature, and I have not seen any data that contradicts Hansen. If anything, 2023 seems like an even more rapid acceleration over what has been previously observed. This is the chart that scares the crap out of me:

It takes an incomprehensible large amount of energy to heat the ocean and in 2023 the amount of heat it is storing jumped to an entirely new level. I think Hansen has to be correct for that to have happened.
In the U.S., private companies spend about 5x on drug development than the government. The numbers are probably fuzzier than that though because I don’t think the government spending numbers capture things like grants to graduate students working on drug research.
And yet 2023 was the new all time high for carbon emissions, at least until 2024 is in the book. We will not cut emissions until we run out of easily extractable carbon to emit. We’ll be building solar powered pumps for oil wells at some point for the otherwise negative EROI. As a species, we deserve the consequences of our behavior. Too bad they will be most severe for some of the least responsible first.
