I’ll give you one ton of pure gold if you let it slide this time
I’ll give you one ton of pure gold if you let it slide this time
That’s what I assumed after “who mourns for Morn?”
Luckily, gold is still valuable here
Replicator, then replicate a shit ton of gold and sell it, becoming wealthy enough I can live my wildest fantasies.
I assume they can replace gold…
Solidly a “were using AI to do cool things, but those cool things don’t improve our core business” project.
This product only makes sense to exist where Google is trying to show it gets AI, once it becomes more commoditized and integrated with language apps then they’ll be forced to confront the fact that teaching is not just translation, and the expert knowledge of language apps will beat them.
I’m bearish on the longevity of this one.
(The base of this tech does help their business, this front end doesn’t)
I’ve worked at more than one company where chrome thought the internet/internal websites were a phishing attempt due to URL similarity to their public sites… I foresee this causing headaches and confusion.
Is that shitloads in British imperial or American?
I think phones from 8 years ago were fine, but phones from the last 3-5 years are in my opinion basically fully developed.
Good batteries, good cameras that are no longer really getting better (we’ve looped back to the megapixel wars), basically desktop class chips that can run full 3d games or even AR with on the fly ML. They’re waterproof, the glass is durable (I dropped a Pixel Pro down the stairs onto ceramic tile yesterday and it’s perfectly fine), antennas are super fast, NFC works, they support strong encryption quickly… The screens are all super high def OLED with HDR and amazing colour quality which looks amazing and I’ve never seen one burn in.
Really the only new stuff to add is generative AI for like text completion, and that doesn’t even run reasonay on 99% of desktops.
Between the economy and cost of living, the high prices of phones, and lackluster releases these last several years (since 2020 at least), I don’t give this surprising at all.
I’m going to drive my iPhone 12 mini until it dies, then I’ll look at phones. Each year I look and there’s nothing new.
Here’s the upcoming release from all manufacturers in 2024:
the new Pro Phone Maximum Erection Pro Version in Pro Green (blue was so 2023) has a 6.7" SuperLiquidThunderCat™️ screen. The camera is even better, it’s Pro! With more AI it’ll fuck around with your precious memories so you forget you ever had that ugly cousin, you’ll be like “who’s that supermodel with the Halloween mask skin”?! The camera has 130 lenses and lens equivalents (that means preset zoom levels, for all you non Pros). The battery is even better this year, it lasts barely longer than your already good enough battery life, but now it’s Pro. And with these new AI features, your battery drains 30% faster, and we’ll scan every text message and photo you have and send it to the cloud for training. Pro! AI!
This is the real reason programmers are pushing Rust so hard.
With the borrow semantics you have a much better idea who owns your balls than traditional reference models where everyone downstream thinks they own them.
I would rather a rushed ending than to be left hanging (unless they’re going to do a movie or something)
Maybe the last few years are better, but through the late 2010s Netflix very much looked at the per episode drop off rate for viewers and used that to determine if a show would continue to pull in viewers and get renewed. They were quite aggressive and then when other streaming services started coming into play they aggressively tried cutting costs off dead shows and burned a lot of people.
I like to think of Google as a death fight between hundreds of unsupervised Product Managers all fighting for too few promotions.
They don’t care about the users or the long term, just selling themselves and shitting on the competing PMs to make themselves look good.
Then you’ve got an accounting department trying to reign in the unprofitable stuff for the investors.
I’m having Windows Phone 7 flashbacks.
RIP HTC Raider, you were a great phone that got shafted hard by Google.
It’s stupid to say they’re using AI to generate content when they purchased a stock image which was advertised as not AI from one of the shittier stock photo companies.
They’re still milking Star Wars and Marvel for every penny they can, and they’re not really naming anything creative or new, but that’s a separate issue.
Beyond that there are a lot of entities pushing their own narratives via bot farms and such, and it’s completely opaque to the users and mods who is upvoting content, or what’s being buried by powermods.
Let’s add Reddit to that list too.
USB has had its share of vulnerabilities too, I’m sure if we have dropped support the last 10 years would have seen a lot of shaves to the design of Firewire.
But it is a shame that so many cool features from the 90’s and 2000’s were just gaping security holes.
I loved FireWire, if we had adopted it instead of USB we’d all be driving flying AI cars by now.
The stuff it could do was really cool, you could network computers, daisy chain it, it could transfer data in real time systems (like digital recording or audio setups), and it was actually designed for power delivery, plus it was much much faster than USB (at the time).
Is so dumb that HDMI or DisplayPort over USB-C is called “alt mode”
The USB Consortium are the only group worse at naming things than Microsoft.
The barrel connector was reversible, and I don’t think I ever had one fail.
They did always use way too much space with their AC adapter things and for whatever reason nargles liked to steal them.
Apple didn’t have a claim to all small size screens, they were the only ones who ordered them in the first place. So this isn’t their fault, though I do resent them dropping the 13 mini so suddenly (I had expected to pick one up after this announcement, but they cost the same as the newest pro…)
The small phone project is looking for existing screens so they don’t have to design and pay for the tooling to produce them.
