  • I think you could just ask something like “what are some of your favourite world cuisines excluding the obvious ones?” and then explain what you mean.

Apologies though, I guess this is just because it’s not your first language, what you said makes sense it’s more the connotations of the phrase. I think someone also posted a gif making a similar joke. Probably the best straight up alternative without the connotations would be “world food/cuisine.”

North Korean! Would love to try it but I guess similar to South Korean food?

  • I don’t want to go through all but some of the more interesting ones:

Ethiopian - delicious stew/curry type food with this fermented flatbread stuff that almost smells a bit like beer. Way better than this makes it sound, lol

Vietnamese - if you like Chinese food you will love it. It’s somewhere between Thai and Chinese. They have an awesome beef noodle soup called pho

Jamaican - my family is partially from here so bias but jerk chicken is worth a mention alone. Very well spiced and usually super juicy chicken. Meat and rice type of stuff. But ackee and saltfish is interesting too, very salted cod mixed with this subtle flavoured fruit that looks a bit like eggs? Again better than it sounds.

Moroccan - If you’re interested in Egyptian food (I also have no idea what that would be, lol) Morrocan is probably a good recommendation. They have a dish called tajine which is a well spiced chicken stew, they cook it in a special pot I think

Mexican! - I know it’s obvious but in Europe Mexican restaurants are very basic. Tacos, burritos etc. But there are so many amazing dishes like mole (chocolate and chilli sauce, fucking delicious) that always get missed. There’s one called queso relleño (?) That is basically like a very rich Bolognese wrapped in cheese and FRIED. Probably best not to eat too often. But maybe you guys in the US get more authentic Mexican food anyway

Also, saying “ethnic foods” comes across a little odd. Makes you sound like a 50 year old white guy who’s never left his home town and isn’t so sure about all this weird food these strange brown people eat. Nothing wrong with being white or culturally insulated of course, but probably not the look you were going for. Might explain the downvotes.

  • Elden Ring! I think they really refined the formula, made it a bit more user friendly (I started with Dark Souls and it wasn’t easy to know what to do), and is generally fun to play. Also the open world format means you can just go somewhere else if you’re stuck, not just have to bang your head against the same boss over and over. Then you just come back when you’re stronger.

Sekiro is not a bad option too, it’s a bit more like a regular game than the others. You can pause! Imagine.

I haven’t played DS2 or Demon Souls though

  • I was born in the UK but with a West Indian and an actual Indian grandparent on one side. Lived there my entire life up until relatively recently. There were still people who would consider me not British. When people either in the UK or where I live now ask where I’m from and I tell them I’m British, there are many people who say “but where are you really from?”

But it doesn’t mean anything if I say I’m Jamaican, or Indian, because one I’ve been to for some odd trips as a kid and the other I only transferred through an airport. Yeah my DNA shows that, but my entire life has basically minimal connection to either of those places and a continuous connection to Britain.

I got the accent and the passport, but I didn’t get the skin colour. So these people will always exist who want to make it seem like I’m not “really” British. But that is on them, not me. I am British, whether they like it or not.

This is really a long winded way of saying: there will always be some people who consider you not truly British. Fuck them. They are idiots that have at best shackled themselves to some outdated view of what it means to be “British” and at worst want to shutter the whole country off to anyone who doesn’t look or speak like them and pull us all back to the stone age.

I think if you speak to people you are close with about this they would consider you British. If you speak with Baz down at the Red Lion he’ll ask you for a pierogi and then fall asleep in his own vomit after a few too many pints of carling. I think Baz is much less important than all of the real people in your life and most of all, the way you view yourself.

  • I think r/InternationalNews was mainly created as a place to discuss issues free from the rampant Zionism of r/WorldNews.

Happy to have people on Lemmy but I have to say, Lemmy as a whole seems way more anti-Israel than reddit right now. Although to be fair outside of r/WorldNews and a few other places, the general mood does seem to be shifting away from Israel pretty hard.

For me this is nice to see, because fuck Israel right to hell, but you’ll certainly see the same type of content here. I like that if people don’t like it they can make their own community or even an instance, and also that people are generally more free to disagree here (partially due to lax moderation I guess). You should have never been banned for that comment by the sound of it, absolutely stupid.

  • I would say albums as an art form overall. Yes of course some bands and musicians will still write an album in this way, but music has been playlist-ified to the point where most people won’t listen to it like that. You take a song or two from it and forget the rest exist. My perception is that it’s been a dying thing for some time now.

I also pick off my favourite songs from most albums, to be fair. But there are some albums that are best viewed as a single piece of art and I feel like that understanding from both listeners and artists is dying. If you just listen to Money and Breathe (In the Air) when they show up in your shuffle, are you really listening to Dark Side of the Moon?

  • Would help to have more details on the math. I would say try for the W but take the L. If you could do it with the formulas can’t you just remember a few important ones? If you only need to pass it might be enough to carry you through.

Imagine you hid a bit of paper successfully (seems difficult on it’s own but anyway): how do you check it? There will surely be people watching so you can’t go digging around in your shoe.

If you get caught cheating, there is a 0% chance you pass. If you try, the chance is higher than 0.

I don’t know the details but I’m sure there’s some other way around this where you won’t be totally fucked if it doesn’t go well

  • Israel is doing the actual killing, but let’s be real. Hamas knew what would happen when they attacked, that was likely part of the reason for it. Their intent was to provoke exactly this type of over response. They have the blood of the 21k (whatever, I don’t keep up anymore, too many) on their hands just like the IDF. To them, this is mission accomplished. Fuck them.

  • Yeah the thing that really pissed me off is how they got r/star_trek shut down. Not only could you not have an honest conversation about something you love on the official sub, when someone makes an alternative for that specific reason they still just can’t let people have it. There was a lot of criticism of the r/startrek mods on there for a while, admittedly, but they deserve it. It’s pathetic.

It’s because that sub was basically moved from Reddit to the fediverse and resides on the actual Star Trek website. Just proves the rumor that CBS/Paramount has been influencing it all along.

    Well shit.
