  • I’m sorry; AI was trained on the sole sum of human knowledge… if the perfect human being is by nature some variant of a psychopath, then perhaps the bias exists in the training data, and not the machine?

How can we create a perfect, moral human being out of the soup we currently have? I personally think it’s a miracle that sociopathy is the lowest of the neurological disorders our thinking machines have developed.

  • I had something like this happen at a corp I once worked at. The CTO said they were going to outsource their entire datacenter and support staff to India.

I literally laughed in his face and obviously, got fired (always have 6-8 months of salary as an emergency fund, ahem-).

I won’t name the company but when half the Internet went down and a few major services? Yeah, it was that asshat driving and running between the datacenters realizing people in Bangladesh can’t do shit for you physically.

It’s like that graph: “Say we want to fuck around at a level 8, we follow this axis, and we’re going to find out at around a level 7 or 8”

  • Yeah honestly, I bought Tarkov second-hand for $8 and even then I felt like I was getting ripped off.

It’s probably not news to anyone but the game has extremely lax anti-cheat controls.

As for why people would cheat in an online game, it always seems obvious from a psychological standpoint, but the cheats for Tarkov are so egregious they’re like full blown developer offline DEBUG TOOLS.

I don’t mean “oh no, aim assistance, and they can see you through walls” – the cheat tools are hooking into features of the GAME ENGINE ITSELF, allowing players to see:

PlayerName, Current HP, Current Level, Full inventory contents, currently equipped weapon, position, heading, estimated value of inventory, estimated value of your account, age of account creation, and so on.

They can also: Teleport, FLY, increase or decrease their run speed, jump height, and so on.

The cheaters are basically running around with admin privileges in the game, and the developers don’t give a flying fuck. It’s like GTA5 levels of cheating.

Why would anyone play such a game, much less pay $150 to be abused by people? You can slam your dick in a car door for a lot less.

The Overview Effect is real, but there is a certain percentage of our species that is so brain damaged that it does not work.

I was watching the Blue Origin test launch and a teary eyed William Shatner was beyond words at seeing his planet from the outside for the first time, and was holding onto Jeff Bezos in gratitude for the opportunity to have done so (who was also on the same pod/shuttle) –

And Jeff Bezos just stared. Into the void. Past Shatner. Unaffected. I thought he was in shock at seeing the Earth as well as first but… that’s when it really sunk in. He wasn’t in shock, he truly didn’t feel anything.

Cognition is so vastly different, and sometimes it breaks - some people are fundamentally unaltered by such an experience and they operate on a lower level, like praying mantises, observing prey.

There used to be a word for it in the Diagnostic Service Manuals before they removed it: Psychopathy.

The overview effect is the purest litmus test for psychopathy.

I think the Redditors managed to fully come over to Lemmy and the overall theme there prior to leaving late last year was one of depression, apathy, surrender, and overall doomerism.

Lemmy was/is filled with Linux nerds and trans people.

The cross section, I guess is this?

I don’t know. I also hope ya’ll are doing well.

Drink some water. Read a book. Go for a walk. Observe nature. Call your parents/grandparents (if they’re alive)… etc.

  • I went to a convention once, deciding that it was redundant to bring my laptop with me when my smartphone alone should have been perfectly capable to do all of my online only Internet tasks.

I ended up having my credit card skimmed from an ATM, and someone withdrew around $500-1000 as a result of that, which was about half of the money that I had on my account, and allocated towards that particular trip.

Let me tell you, it was not comforting, sitting on a hotel bed with a tiny overheating smartphone (Galaxy S2 back then), navigating the bank’s website with my thumbs, on a slow mobile connection, which kept on crashing. Their phone lines were busy for 3+ hours because it was a major event.

I realized in that particular moment, that I always needed a backup, high speed computer (or laptop) with a full physical keyboard and mouse for specifically those circumstances, where time was absolutely critical.
