It was a great adventure. But yeah, that setup was on 24/7. Not because of compilation, but it definitely made a lot of this more feasible

Gentoo unstable was a little bit tiring in the long run. The bleeding edge, but often I needed to downgrade because the rest of the libraries were not ready

Gentoo stable was really great. Back then pulseaudio was quite buggy. Having a system where I could tell all applications and libraries to not even link to it (so no need to have it installed at all) made avoiding its problems really easy
But when my hardware got older and compilation of libreoffice started to take 4h, I remembered how nice it was on Slackware where you just install package you broke and you’re done

Arch looked like a nice middle-ground. Most of the things in packages, big focus on pure Linux configurability (pure /etc files, no Ubuntu(or SUSE?) “you need working X.org to open distro-specific graphics card settings”) and AUR for things there are no official packages for. Turned out it was a match :)

Windows (~6 years) -> Mandriva (Mandrake? For I think 2-3 years) -> Ubuntu (1 day) -> Suse (2 days) -> Slackware (2-3 years) -> Gentoo unstable (2-3 years) -> Gentoo stable (2-3 years) -> Arch (9 years and counting)

The only span I’m sure about is the last one. When I started a job I decided I don’t have the time to compile the world anymore. But the values after Windows sum up to 21, should be 20, so it’s all more or less correct

If you want to access your computer from outside your LAN, it would be a good idea to at least secure it or, unfortunately the best, learn to understand what you are doing

That I don’t know. I haven’t been looking into one-board computers for a while. The one I bought ~10 years ago was running out of juice when I was trying to run Kodi on it last year. Wifi shouldn’t be a problem IMO, I’ve been using mine as torrent downloader and hosted a few university projects (dynamic web apps) on it. The graphics might. I would guess that as long as you find one with decent specs (so probably not the 10$ one) it should work. I’m sure there’s someone who is doing exactly that and either could answer what to buy/look for or wrote a blog about it

I haven’t gotten to it for myself but I think Kodi+something like RaspberryPI is your solution

EDIT: or just install a Linux on some one-board computer or old laptop and check how HDMI-CEC is working. You’ll need to install virtual keyboard too

Yes, I can. But you need much more to accomplish this

1. You need reach: are there any mods/admins that would feel ok with vouching for your abilities? And preferably have info about your proposal stickied on a bunch of communities where it could reach people open to chip in?
2. You need to convince those you reach that you’re not a Nigerian Prince. Mod/Admin saying you’re legit could help with it but maybe there’s something more you could do to convince the public?
   Maybe I simply don’t know who you are, maybe in reality you are second in command after Dessalines. But either you are a random dev saying “I can do that” - in this case you need to somehow convince others that you really can. Or you are not recognised for your work - in this case you need to point us to what tie you to. I saw the fedi project on your GitHub so you probably can code (I’m not going to be auditing your project in order to asses your skills, sorry). But are you just a dreamer or are you serious?
   I’m sorry if what I’m saying sounds harsh. I just feel that how you are coming through to the other side gets lost in translation here
3. GitHub is not the most popular support medium. Why not also have Patreon/Koffi/OpenCollective/etc? Many will chip in easier if they’re already present on the platform

But even if, I think it’s still an improvement. Even if firmware is proprietary, you could flash it on “titan-compatible” chip when yours dies making your device independent from chip ownership etc

I also think that grassroots economy would work better for many things. But we’re not there, the world doesn’t work like that ATM. Wish for 10% of people to contribute is very optimistic IMO.
You need much wider spread, and for me (for example) your tool is the only thing that gives you any credibility. If there are others like me, you might be missing clout for a call to support like that to simply just work
