I’m completely ignorant of your countries armed forces split, but in theory, who are these guys supposed to fight against? Is it like people defending the king or something?

They also help out with labor during disasters like Hurricane Katrina. They can be activated by the US president and deployed overseas, but they’re usually used domestically by State Governors.
