The Nintendo 64 release of Banjo-Kazooie has been fully decompiled, which opens up significant opportunities for fan projects and potentially native PC ports.
How easy is it to decomp these games? I really want to play Star Wars Episode I: Racer on Linux with raytracing and all that.
The Dreamcast version of Ep1 Racer has better graphics, cutscenes, and hacks to get 60fps. Redream works on Linux
Didn’t know that the dreamcast version was superior. I’ll have to check that out.
I could be wrong but I don’t think that the decomp/recomp tools are available for Dreamcast the way they are for n64. Like if I want a game to run natively on Linux without an emulator whike doing things like raytracing then it seems like the n64 games would be where I’d have to start.
Unless there are decomp/recomp tools for the dreamcast?
Wouldn’t the PC port that’s on GOG be the best version or am I missing something?
Wow!
Decomp? Extremely hard and time consuming.
Recompilation? Way easier, but still: some assembly required.
Now do Conker’s, so we can play the multiplayer games.
I just want to see what the game looks like at a stable framerate.
This reminds me. I haven’t looked to see how that auto compiler is coming along. Last I was reading they were trying to figure out how to generate a data file or something
For about 10 seconds, and then Nintendo lawyers show up in droves.
They can’t do shit about decompilations, since no copyright is violated. Also: I think M$ is the rightsholder now.
Are the characters themselves still not copyrighted?
And yes, you’re right. It’s been 20+ years, and my brain STILL refuses to believe that Nintendo DIDN’T buy Rare during the gamecube era. It still makes no sense to me. And it’s like my brain refuses to accept it.
You’ll have to supply your own rom. Then it’s not copyright infringement, since you can do whatever you want with the copy you’ve purchased.
Well, this list of Unofficial PC Ports proves other wise https://github.com/Sebastrion/awesome-unofficial-pc-ports
The lawsuit dance has already been done. Can’t sue over decompiled code, but they can sue over assets, so anyone who wants to actually play something made with a decompilation has to supply a “legal” ROM that’s rightfully “theirs” for the assets to be sourced from
Beautiful, I was just thinking about playing through this again!
Hopefully this paves the way for an easier Conker decomp too :)
Nice. Waiting for the Vita port!
